According to data from GitHub’s Innovation Graph, a repository containing structured data files of public activity on the platform, more than 20 million US software developers are actively engaged on GitHub. The findings, released on January 18 and based on data from Q3 2023, offer a detailed breakdown of global developer activity, covering top programming languages, user counts by country, and collaborative efforts within the economy.Key discoveries from the GitHub Innovation Graph include:

  • Over 20,226,000 US developers and more than 1,132,400 US organizations are actively contributing to GitHub.US developers have uploaded code to GitHub more than 23.7 million times.US developers and/or organizations own a collective total of more than 56.7 million repositories on GitHub.The top collaborators with US developers hail from Canada, Germany, and India, as measured by Git pushes and pull requests between different economies.JavaScript holds the top position as the most widely used programming language in the United States, based on the number of unique developers uploading code, followed by Python and Shell.
  • Launched initially in September 2023, the GitHub Innovation Graph draws on raw data dating back to 2020. The latest data release represents a significant update aimed at providing policymakers and researchers with enhanced insights into the intricacies of global software development, especially concerning collaborative efforts across different countries, as highlighted by GitHub.
